Children are very special gift
provided to mankind by Allah. They are the most beautiful creation on earth.
They are the purest souls among all human beings. There is no beauty of life
and without them. Apart from these facts, children are the most valuable asset
of a nation, country and a society. A wise nation always provides accessible
means of education to his future generation and other means of living to grow
into healthy and educated youth. Parents provide their children with good
education, food, spend money on them and treat them with love and affection. It
is an ideal situation because in reality, this does not happen always. Children
are not always provided with all these facilities. They are forced to earn
money by themselves to fulfill their needs. There are also many cases in which
a children support their whole family.
They are forced to kill their
innocent wishes and sweet dreams. They never become able to get quality
education along with earning livelihood. This situation when a child gets
education, in addition of earning money, is called child labour. There are a
number of definitions related to child labour.
In one way it is defined as: “child labour is generally speaking work
for children that harms them or exploits them in anyway (physically, morally
and mentally or blocking access to education)”. It can also be defined as employments of child under the minimum
level of age. The international
Child labour Organization (ILO) defines child labour in following way;
1- When a child is
working during early age
2- He overworks or
gives over time to Labour
3- He works due to
the psychologically, socially, and materialistic pressure
4- He becomes
ready to Labour on a very low pay
United Nations International
Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has defined child labour as; “some type of work performed by children
below age 18”.
Child labour is not only common in Pakistan , but
also in the whole world including other third world countries. It has become a
global issue and rate of child labour is increasing day by day. According to a
report, 220 million children, aged 5 to 17, are subject to child labour all
around the world. In Asia , child labour ratio
is leading by 61%. Africa is at second
position with 32% ratio of child labour. Children are imposed to work in mines,
different industries including cloth printing, glass work, stone crushing,
carpet waving, lifting and carrying heavy objects in transport industry etc.
When a child grows up working in such environment, his health and moral
character is affected badly.
There are multi reasons behind this
challenging problem. Some of them include poverty, lack of opportunities, high
rate of population growth, uneven distribution of wealth, and resources etc. In
Pakistan ,
30% of total population is leading a life below poverty line. This very part of
the society has great difficulty to overcome their hunger, so in that case how
could they get education to their children. Hence children born in such
environment have to earn money for their needs. Another reason for child labour
in Pakistan
is class-based education system. Rich people have no difficulty in providing
education to their children in best schools of the country. But on other side,
poor children don’t get quality education and hence fail to get awareness and
opportunities to move forward. Our poor class is not socially secured. No funds
and allowances are provided to them by the state. Hence they find this a better
way to get their children a job instead of educating them. They think that
education is merely wastage of time.
There have been made many laws in
order to prohibit the child labour. The Constitution of Islamic Republic of
Pakistan states: "No child below
the age of fourteen shall be engaged in any factory or mine or in any other
hazardous employment." Also, "All forms of forced labor and traffic in human beings is
prohibited." There are many other laws made by international
organizations such as UNICEF. These laws should be strictly followed to
overcome this challenging problem.
Best solution for child labour is
to make education compulsory and state should provide free education, free
books and other stationery to the poor children. Orphan and poor children must
be financially helped to get education. Awareness must be raised among the
parents and they should be encouraged for educating their children. Serious
steps must be practiced to eliminate child labour from the society in order to
provide the country a healthy and educated future in the form of youth.
